B-Day Hockey Game

20170324_183423

We had some free tickets to a local hockey game on the 24th, last weekend.  They were pretty damn good seats and we were only two rows from the ice behind the goal.  The picture is of the visiting team warming up ahead of the game starting.  We ended up moving up a few rows as I swear they were aiming pucks directly at our heads.

B-day Cake

20170326_133652

If you’re wondering if this was a death by chocolate cake, it most certainly was.  A special request by me for the chocolateiest cake ever.  It had fudge icing, chocolate points around the outside, chocolate cake and a fudge middle between the layers.  It took me and the daughter 4 days to completely eat the whole thing even after we had the party this past Sunday.

This is what you end up with when you procrastinate and pile up your computer work into a single day.  My work laptop (black) with the top mouse is to the left, personal laptop (silver) is on the right, the keyboard and second mouse is for the monitor on the top of the shelf.  The computer hooked to the monitor is on the floor in front of my desk.  I’m sure at this point I’m slowly dying from computer induced radiation.

Humans don’t need to suffer like this

This is an opinion piece based on the article below.

How bad does the world have to get before we start to realize that it’s not all clean tap water, endless food buffets and golden toilets that whisk our poop away?  Real people, children, are suffering an agonizing slow death because of a comparatively smaller group of self-centered and self-absorbed rich elites.  I didn’t have the words to describe my disappointment until recently and I’ve stopped turning away and ignoring the problem.  It is unacceptable to me that in a country of so-called Christians, we have put a man into the White House that is going to reduce the amount of funds that go to foreign humanitarian aid, not increase them.

The commodity that is so badly needed in these areas you ask?  Water.  Simple water.  So many American’s take it for granted that when they turn on the tap, clean and drinkable water flows out.  What if all of a sudden, due to causes outside of your control, that water was now cloudy, thick and slimy; would you still drink it?  Would you get so thirsty, almost on the brink of death, that you would risk drinking the water that you know for certain will get you sick?  I’ve personally never been in that position, but imagine that I would in order to fight for my life and stay alive.  A human can go 4-6 weeks without food, but only 4-5 days without water before a fatality occurs.

There is a real possibility, almost a certainty, that Somalia, South Sudan, Nigeria and Yemen will be in the grips of a months long famine later this year.  That is approximately 20 million people who will be starving and dehydrated and more than likely facing death before the end of this year.  How can the world idly standby and watch this crisis unfold and not do anything?  There is more than enough food and water in the world to where no one would ever have to face being hungry or thirsty ever again.  Technology has enabled us to clean the dirtiest and nastiest of any source of water.  We have the ability to create self-sustaining systems of food production after creating the environment for that to take hold in the first place.

All it takes, unfortunately, is money.  Money drives all of our decisions, not fellow humans.  Why someone sitting on $75 billion doesn’t believe they can part with 50% of their wealth and STILL live the same life they’re living currently is beyond my comprehension.  I’ve never even had $1 million, let alone $1 billion.  Sure there will be some in the “have” category that will see this as the ravings of someone in the “have not” category.  I have enough in my life to live the way I do, I don’t need more than that.  I’ve had my down turns and have been financially troubled in the past, but I’ve pulled through.  A portion of my salary, even in my lowest points, has been set aside for donations to various organizations that assist foreign humanitarian efforts.

Call me an apologist, a bleeding-heart, or whatever else that comes to mind.  It won’t change how disappointed I am with some of my fellow humans that refuse to see others not as fortunate as they are as anything but a sub-standard class of people.  We don’t choose where we get born, but we choose how we get to live our lives regardless of where we’re born.  A Somalian native, scratching the best existence their circumstances allow, is a far better example of a human being than most wealthy elite in any first world country.

When it’s America’s turn to suffer drought, food shortages, etc., will we get the help we need from other countries or will we get a figurative middle finger?

Finding Faith

The wife and I were having a discussion about religion and faith after having watched “The Shack” a week or so back.  The movie had a line that has stuck with both of us and had a strong impact with us.  The character that was implied as being Christ said “Religion is too much work.  All I ever want is friends.”  I may have quoted that incorrectly, but the gist is there.  Causing us both to think about this in our own contexts of religion, we have reached a point where it might be time to start venturing back into faith.  I have never been religious and always had a lot of questions that never really got answered to my satisfaction.  Part of me knows that the point of faith is not knowing everything, but accepting that it’s the way it is for a reason unknown to us.  My hang up was always on the “organization” side of religion and how so many people see faith and religion as the same thing.  I see faith as a completely separate thing from religion and feel that you be faithful to something without having to surrender to the organization of religion.

That said, I’m going to float an idea to the wife and daughter where we each choose a gathering of faithful people (religious or not) and attend each week for a month straight.  My wife will no doubt choose a Catholic church to attend, and that’s okay.  The only rules we will agree to is that we keep an open mind for ALL of the choices and we go through the entire month asking all the questions we feel are necessary.  I think I’m going to find a Buddhist temple to attend as that faith has interested me for years.  A future post will detail our progress and ultimate decision as a family.

Political Opinion

I made my 20th post to EatPrayVote.org yesterday.  My experience writing for this site has been awesome so far.  There is a really good group of writers that span the full spectrum of political positions; conservative, liberal, moderates, progressives, etc.  The level of the writing has improved how I write myself and support from a lot of them has allowed me to improve so much in a short period of time.  Writing for the site (after inquiring) is proving to be one of the best decisions I’ve made in a long time.

Birthdays

It’s the dreaded time of year where it is once again my birthday.  The exact day is not relevant because like Christmas, it’s not something I like to celebrate.  This year we’re doing a family dinner at my house so at least I get to stay home this year.  We’re also doing a more subdued celebration and it’s only my wife’s immediate family.  My side of the family is doing a dinner later in April so we can lump my Mom’s birthday in there too.  Every year I wish to spend the entire 24 hours of my actual birthday alone, but it never actually comes true.  Only other introverts really understand why.  But, for my wife and daughters sake, I’m being a trooper and not being the grumpy-gus I’ve been in previous years.  It’ll all be over soon enough 🙂

The Stage

Swamped!

To say that last few weeks has been busy is an understatement.  I’ve been off my routine and my schedule is suffering because of it.  Nothing for the month of March has been “normal” and for someone like me that relies on routine it’s been that much more difficult.  There has been no opportunity for down time, the time that I take to sit down and write, and it’s starting to make me tired all the time.  I’ve attempted to compensate by trying to go to bed earlier and usually end up being futile in the end.  Adding to the strain is my anti-technology streak that is still continuing despite me knowing it would probably help out to a certain extent.  Something has to change as the pace I’ve kept up just isn’t sustainable over a long period of time.

The wife volunteers at the local fire house and they had their annual banquet over this past weekend.  Our house is no longer the headquarters for the basket raffle items that were all won and I have my Dining Room (soon to be home office) back.  The banquet, which I helped out at on Saturday, went well and made some money.  We’re not sure if this year was better than previous years as no one kept records of the financials.  My wife, the organized person she is, has detailed reports on everything and will preset it at their wrap-up meeting.  She’s made an impression with the fire house and is working on getting a part-time gig approved to do their book-keeping and light accounting work.  It will get her out of her current job, which she hates.

After realizing that I hit my maximum paid-time-off hours after my last paycheck, it was time for me to start taking some days off.  The wife had several that I needed to take because of random half-days and days-off my daughter has with her school.  The American school year really is horrible, but that’s a topic for another day.  We identified several days through June that I submitted for time off.  I added a few of my own, at random, that I’ll figure out what to do when they get closer.  I’ve been itching to get down to Ocean City, NJ for a day and one of those random days before the season starts might be a good time to head down there.  I always liked being down there when it didn’t have hordes of people around.  Some much-needed time off is in my future thankfully.

One more random subject to talk about is my daughter needing to get braces.  She’s counting down the days and it boggles my mind why.  I never had braces and to be honest, never wanted them even if I did need them.  It’s almost like she’s seeing them as a status symbol or a right of passage.  She asked me if they would hurt when she got them on and being blunt, I said of course they would hurt.  Every time she goes in to have them adjusted and tightened, her teeth will ache for a few days until the pressure lets up.  Not being phased about this, she is still excited none the less.  I believe she thinks she will get some special treatment or leniency on the consumption of screen time, but that won’t be the case.  The limits are there for reasons she’s not aware of and that doesn’t change regardless of the situation.

I’m hoping for more time to write in the near future.  See you all Thursday.

Snowpocalypse 2017!

Coming home Monday this week, it was in the mid-40’s (F), sunny, and overall a very nice pre-Spring/late-Winter day.  The weather was talking about impending snow for days prior to Monday and I was skeptical that we were going to get anything as this isn’t the first time they’ve done this and we get about a wet sneeze’s worth of snow.  Here is a picture out my back door Monday at around 4:30pm.

Monday_Afternoon
Really was a nice day on Monday!

Fast-forward 24 hours, and it’s a white wonderland of snow, ice, and 40 MPH gusting winds putting the wind chill down around -10F.  I didn’t get a picture of it, but there was a sizable drift of snow up against the window that was easily 3′ high that’s since blown away from all the wind we had Tuesday into Wednesday.

Tuesday_Afternoon
Quite the difference, huh?

Trumpcare (aka American Healthcare Act)

Ok, don’t get all bent out of shape.  You can be happy about something like this when you see why it’s on my list this week.  Support for this mess of a bill with Republicans is quickly fading and is starting to be at serious risk of not passing one or both houses of Congress.  Having read the bill in it’s various stages, there is quite a bit that is clearly never going to work.  Obamacare (aka Affordable Care Act) is not much better and certainly needs to be replaced with “something.”  What that “something” is actually going to be is still a mystery to me.

Awesome Headset Found!

I finally found my headset that I used at my previous job.  It’s noise-cancelling and was actually on the expensive side.  I had it packed away in a random box that I came across by accident over this past weekend moving some boxes around.  I no longer have to tote the surprisingly fragile headset I have at work with me on days I work from home.  I used it yesterday on a conference call and no one had any issues hearing me on the call.

Man-Cold and The Shack

ManWithACold
98.7F!  I’m dying!

I missed last Monday’s post.  I was sick with a man-cold and didn’t feel like writing let alone doing anything to be honest.  My wife doesn’t get it, when I’m sick, just leave me alone.  I’m content being miserable by myself and don’t need to be checked or waited on.  For the most part she does just let me be, unless there are things that need to be done and she isn’t able to do them.  Reluctantly I forced myself to push through things when all I wanted to do was just go to bed.  Two nights last week I did just that, in bed by 8pm, in a row.  I was asleep by the time she came up and laid down; not even an explosion next to my head could have gotten me up from my sleep.

Now, more than a week after feeling the start of the man-cold, I’m finally starting to feel better but still not quite 100%.  My back teeth are floating though with all the water I’ve been drinking.  My nose is still blocked at times and things that I can normally dismiss in the office are making me nuts.  When I can hear things around me even with headphones on, either I need new batteries in my noise cancelling headphones or I’m way to focused on the noises around me to care about the music in my ears.  Anyway, I wish it was still the weekend, but my area is getting 14″ of snow according to the last forecast Tuesday into Wednesday so at least I’ll be working from home at least the next two days away from all the people who don’t understand how annoying they actually are to me.

The_Shack
Sad is an understatement

The wife and I got some time to go see a movie yesterday, dropped the daughter off at the grandparents house and then came back to have dinner.  We decided to see The Shack instead of Logan because it was my pick, and I’m not terribly interested in seeing Logan to begin with and can wait until it shows up on Netflix/Hulu.  The movie was profoundly sad and depressing with a very strong emphasis on God without being overtly religious.  In fact, there was one line in the movie that said religion was too much work and all he (character portraying Jesus I assumed) wanted was friends.  A father was saving his son from drowning and while in the water his daughter was taken by a pedophile.  The movie was about his journey from blind hatred to forgiveness to faithful acceptance.  Overall I enjoyed the movie and its message as it didn’t focus on any one religion; it focused on the faith.  Lets just say that the last 45 minutes, the theatre was “dusty” and the “dust” kept getting in my “eyes.”

It’s been a long time since a movie had that kind of impact with me.  The last movie with such impact was Passion of the Christ, which was brutally in your face.  No dust in the air with that one, but I wouldn’t want to see it again.  I’m actually surprised with myself for having seen two movies in as many weeks when for years I’ve said movies are a ripoff and not worth the money.  We used a gift certificate two weeks ago and had free “birthday” coupons for Sunday’s movie outing, so we only paid for food.  Not too bad considering the food is decent and relatively enjoyable.  My movie going, unless we get more gift certificates, won’t be continuing.  A $3k fence installation to start in April is sure to make sure of that.

Have a good week, for those in the northeast, stay safe and don’t get buried in the snow.  As long as you have plenty of bread, milk and eggs, you can make snow day French Toast.  I’ll be working and snow-blowing tomorrow.

I’ve had an on and off again relationship with Facebook through the years.  I decided, after much thought, to sign back up and ONLY create a page to attach to my blog.  I did that, but in the 2 weeks since I had my account re-created, it has been disabled for 10 of the 14 days it’s been created.  I’m back on at this point, but it’s a only a matter of time before they disabled me again for some other random reason.

New Painting

Another work of art from my wife’s Girls Night group.  It’s in my office, where all the other ones are.  It’s funny she doesn’t think she’s good, but I think it’s actually brilliant.  I certainly can’t do this.

Trump “State Of The Union”

I streamed the Presidential address on my Roku, and it was ironic that it was FOX News that was streaming the broadcast.  I added the laser beams from Trump’s eyes and added the bubble “FAKE” if you’re wondering.  Just some humor for today.
