I would rather have one year off at my current rate of pay.  The reason is that I make a good living and have a lot of interests that I never have enough time for.  Consistently putting them aside to work doesn’t give me the work/life balance I wish I had.  A full year to explore things without having to worry about paying bills could give me the opportunity to flush out one of those interests into a new career.
