Open travel journal showing a hand-drawn map of Europe with travel routes and notes

I’m sitting here in the auto shop waiting for my car to be inspected thinking about the upcoming trip the family and I are taking to Europe tomorrow for 2 weeks. I’m oddly not anxious or worried about the trip currently which is a change of pace. I’m thinking about what we’re going to be doing, the things we’re going to see while traveling abroad. It’s odd that I’m not more anxious though, but I’m sure that will show up at some point in the next few hours to a day.

Our trip will being in Copenhagen, Denmark and we will be there for several days going around and seeing, and this was promised, “a lot of old stuff that is interesting”. I think we’re heading to Lego Land on one of those days. My foreign travel to date has consisted of a week in Canada (United States light) and Bermuda in the winter. The Bermuda trip wasn’t fun at all and was 10 days in the office trying to bring anti-virus online. We are staying with a host family that my wife met when she was in high school when the husband spent a year in the United States as an exchange student. They kept in touch all these years and when he found out we were thinking of going to Europe, he immediately said we’re staying with him. We planned the trip around their summer vacation so they will be with us the entire time.

The second leg of the trip will be spent in Berlin, Germany. We got a hotel room for the few days we’re going to be there which will be a welcome change of pace. I’m not too comfortable sleeping in places that aren’t my own bed, so having a hotel room with a large bed will help me get some sleep. During this portion, we’re hopefully seeing a holocaust museum and the wall. Beyond that, I’m just going with the flow and doing what everyone else is doing. My plan (hope rather) is that I can just enjoy the time and not get lost in the details of not being at home and things not being in a routine. I think I can do that, but we will be on the go for almost 2 weeks solid so that may be somewhat difficult.

This is the first time all of us have left the United States to a completely different continent. I know my wife is anxious that everything is setup and good, but I know some things will just not go to plan, which is fine. The sleeping situation has me a bit concerned as I have no idea what “sleeping in the pool house” actually means, but I’m assuming that it’s a bedroom of sorts with at least a toilet in the room. I do know there is only one shower, to share among 6 people, which could cause some issues. I anticipate that I will be waking up early most days due to an inability to sleep well, but that goes with the territory for me.

I’m still looking forward to the trip regardless of some of the concerns I have. Traveling with my wife though can be difficult at times and I’ve learned to let the situation play out without a lot of interaction and things typically work out in the end. Time will tell.

I hope to have some good pictures to post after I get back.

Let’s have a discussion!
